Featured Spirits @ Bijou

Bijou Restaurant & Bar (1036 B Street in downtown Hayward) is featuring these amazing spirits during the upcoming month of June. Sure, everybody has heard of the big players in the liquor industry: Patron, Grey Goose, Bombay Saphire, Hennessy...the list goes on. But there are so many amazing spirits from smaller, artisan distillers that deserve to be mentioned (and drank!), so here's what's being featured during June @ Bijou:

The Glenrothes 1985 single malt scotch is packaged is an eye-catching ‘sample’ bottle. The '85 displays honey, marmalade, spices and bitter chocolate on the complex nose, with light smoke and vanilla also developing. A delicious blend of fruits, honey and spices emerge in the mouth, with smooth heather, prunes and refined oak notes. Vanilla and brittle toffee feature in the elegant and lengthy finish. One of my favorites!

The 1991 vintage of Glenrothes single malt scotch has vanilla, honey, fudge and hedgerow berries on the nose. There's also a fleeting hint of spent matches. Coconut, melons, ginger and spice on the palate. Spicy and quite assertive in the finish.

Pyrat XO Reserve is a select blend of fine, 15 year old Caribbean rums. It’s smooth taste and delicious flavor is complimented by it’s rich amber color. Wonderful, classic sipping rum.

Aged 12 years in used bourbon barrels, this rum from Nicaragua is full of dried fruit and nut flavors, making it the perfect rum to sip with dessert, a cigar, or simply on its own.

I LOVE tequila, and Clase Azul Reposado is my go-to nectar of the Gods! The perfect marriage between the finest tequila and a beautiful hand-crafted, hand-painted Mexican fine ceramic bottle. Produced and bottled in Jalisco, from 100% agave (weber blue agave) and twice distilled. Aging in fine oak barrels gives Clase Azul distinct, smooth flavors and aromos, as well as an excellent balance over the palate.

Martin Millers Gin...excellent small-batch pot-still gin, blended with extra-pure Icelandic spring water. Awarded 94 points (Exceptional) by the the Beverage Tasting Institute. Cassia bark, Florentine Iris and coriander are among the select botanicals gently married with juniper during distillation for a result as noble and genteel as the simply modern bottle. At this point the distillate travels 3,000 miles across the sea to Iceland for a finishing touch in which it is blended with the purest water on Earth that has been naturally filtered through the island's lava. It is here that the finished gin is poured into bottles reflecting the nautical journey and simple refinement any Englishman would be proud of. But what about the taste? As the silky liquid caresses the tongue the true flavors of the botanicals come to light with the most subtle juniper, cardamom and peppercorn leading the way. Juniper takes the spotlight in a short, warm finish in an explosive manner that contradicts all the previous subtleties.

Ah! I've missed these specials, but my trip to Bijou earlier did reveal that I love the Spring Fling cocktail (haven't tried their Sazerac yet) and the food was delicious, too!

Another time, other specials--I'm counting on it.

Take care,
